The Northeast Generals defeated the visiting Rebels 6 – 3 last night to split the weekend series between the teams. Despite the loss, the Rebels won the season series between the teams. Charles Panchisin had a pair of goals for Philadelphia.
The Generals’ Matthew DeSpirt opened the scoring with 1:09 remining in the first period. After Northeast’s Joseph McGraw took a shot in close that was saved by Rebels netminder Jack Fialkoff, the rebound came right out to DeSpirt on the door step and DeSpirt slammed the biscuit into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
The Rebels then scored two successive goals early in the second period to take a 2 – 1 lead.
Billy Sheridan knotted the score at one at 6:36 into the middle stanza. Thomas Neu picked up the loose puck at the top of his own far side faceoff circle and skated through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone. As Neu gained the line and cut towards center ice, he took a wrist shot that was saved by Northeast goalie Peter Wickström Stumer but Sheridan picked up the rebound and took a shot that went over the netminder’s head and into the net for Sheridan’s third goal of the season.
Luke Minard was called for tripping at 8:49 of the second period to give Northeast the man advantage. Ten seconds later the Rebels took a 2 – 1 lead on a nifty move from Panchisin. After Brock Jones won the draw deep inside his own zone, he passed the puck to Panchisin on his left who skated through center ice and into the offensive zone. As Panchisin gained the line, he stopped, reversed and the went around one player and took a wrist shot from the top of the slot that beat Wickström Stumer for his first goal of the game.
The Generals then scored four unanswered goals to take control of the game.
While still on the powerplay from Minard’s penalty, McGraw’s first goal of the game midway through the second evened the score at two. Looking to set up in the offensive zone, Northeast’s Brendan Kimball took a wrist shot from the top of the slot that Fialkoff made a blocker save but the rebound came right out to McGraw who tapped the biscuit into the back of the net for his tenth goal of the season.
Fialkoff was called interference with three minutes remaining in the middle stanza to put the Generals on the powerplay. Forty-five seconds later McGraw scored his second goal of the contest after he picked up a rebound left on the doorstep and he went around Fialkoff and McGraw lifted the biscuit up and over the fallen Rebels netminder to give the Generals the lead.
Twenty-three seconds later DeSpirit took a wrist shot from the far side point that found its way through traffic and past Fialkoff to double the Generals lead.
Kimball scored at 3:46 into the third period to make it a 5 – 2 game. Panchisin’s second goal of the game was on the powerplay at 8:20 of the third period to bring the Rebels within two but Northeast’s Jacob Wilson scored at 9:31 into the final period to make it 6 – 3 and close out the scoring.
Fialkoff stopped 23 of 29 shots while Wickström Stumer turned aside 23 of 26. Click HERE for the complete box score.
The Rebels will host the New Jersey Titans on Tuesday at 7:30PM at the Hollydell Ice Arena and then leave on Thursday for a two-game series against the Rochester Jr. Americans that begins on Friday.
