Five Things: Rebels Host Generals to Kick Off 2023

Jan 6, 2023

SEWELL, NJ – After a lengthy break, the Philadelphia Rebels (11-15-1-1, 24 pts) return to action and will host the Northeast Generals (18-10-3-1, 40 pts) on Friday and Saturday nights at Hollydell Ice Arena.

Here are five things to know ahead of the series:

1. Long Time No See

The last time the Rebels and Generals matched up was in early October, but they are set to match up much more often in the next month.

In Philadelphia’s next 13 games, six of them will come against the Generals. After this weekend, the Rebels will travel for two series in Attleboro, Mass. on Jan. 19-20 and Feb. 9-10.

The Rebels and Generals both ended 2022 in winning ways as the Rebels have points in eight of their last 10 and Northeast has points in four straight.

2. Hot in the Winter

The Rebels haven’t lost a two-game series since November, and are 7-2-1-0 in their last 10 games.

The Rebels only lost one game in December, which came to the Maryland Black Bears, who are a point shy of Lone Star atop the NAHL standings.

The Generals are also on a winning streak, going 6-1-2-1 in their last 10 contests. The winning streak propelled the Generals into second place in the East Division, passing the New Jersey Titans by two points.

3. December Mentions

David Deputy, Dom Foglia, and Jakub Krbecek were all named as honorable mentions for the league’s December’s Stars of the Month, and have been a big part in the Rebels’ recent success.

Deputy leads the Rebels in goals (9) and points (21). Deputy also recently announced his commitment to play Division I hockey at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Rebels acquired Dom Foglia from Corpus Christi on November 14th, and since then, Foglia has been named an honorable mention in back-to-back months. Foglia recorded two assists in December and played a big part on both Rebels’ special teams units.

Jakub Krbecek continues to impress in the month of December, winning both games he started to spring his season total to nine. In the pair of wins, Krbecek accumulated a .946 save percentage a 2.31 goals against average.

4. A Game-Winning Gift

The last time the Rebels took the ice, they beat the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks on the road in the extra frame on Dec. 19.

Greg Spitznagel scored the game-winning goal in overtime, and sent Rebels into the holiday break and the new year with a victory.

5. Scouting Northeast

Overall, Northeast has been dominant on the offensive side of the puck. The Generals have scored 104 goals on the season so far which ranks fourth in the East Division and sixth in the NAHL.

Northeast features three of the league’s top-four point scorers with David Andreychuk (42), Paul Minnehan (39) and Jake LaRusso (37).

Toby Hopp’s .930 save percentage is third best in the league, logging 10 wins in 13 games.

Friday and Saturday’s games begin at 8:00 p.m. and can be seen on HockeyTV. Admission is free for all fans.
