The Fairbanks Ice Dogs used three power play goals en route to a 5 – 0 win over the visiting Aston Rebels. The Rebels concluded their Alaskan trip with a 2 – 2 record.
The game was very tight in the first period, with both teams having only six shots apiece. But with three seconds remaining in the opening period Tanner Schachle tucked in a rebound from a Kyle Mayhew shot past Rebels goalie Mareks Mitens to give the Ice Dogs a 1 – 0 lead.
The start of the second period began the same way the first period ended. Samuel Ruffin scored only 49 seconds into the middle stanza when he took a clapper from the far side faceoff circle that beat Mitens long side for his fifth goal on the year.
The Ice Dogs would go up 3 – 0 with 4:12 into the second when Ruffin’s one-timer from the left circle was initially saved by Mitens but the rebound came right out to Robert Blueger who knocked in the rebound past Mitens for his eighth goal on the season.
Head coach Joe Coombs tried to jumpstart his team by immediately replacing Mitens with Jack Leavy after the Blueger goal.
Blueger would score his second goal on the night when he picked up a rebound from a Hampus Eriksson shot and put a rebound past Leavy at the 10:15 mark to give the Ice Dogs a 4 – 0 lead.
Daniel Haider would score his tenth goal on the season took a shot from the right circle that beat Leavy to make the score 5 – 0 with three minutes remaining.
Mitens and Leavy combined to save 13 of 18 shots while Josh Benson stopped all 20 Rebels’ shots. Click here for the box score.
