Rebels head coach Joe Coombs said recently: “The Knights have a good team, and they’re going to beat someone. I just hope it isn’t us” referring to the team only having one victory during the season. Unfortunately, Coombs’ fear came true.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights won their second game of the season defeating the Rebels 4-0 behind a 31 save performance by Knights’ goalie Grant Valentine, thereby ending the Rebels six game winning streak and giving the team a 7-4 record. The Knights and Rebels had a weekend split.
The Knights’ Carson Knop scored the game’s first goal – and eventual game winner – at the 12:51 mark of the first period on a short handed goal by beating Rebels goalie Trevor Micucci. The Knights’ Blake Busch then scored an unassisted goal at 2:25 of the second period. Trying to infuse energy into his team, Coombs replaced Micucci with Darion Hanson.
Busch then scored his second goal of the game, and second unassisted, by beating Hanson at the 12:36 mark of the second stanza. The Knights’ Carson Knop scored a short handed, empty net goal with :50 seconds left in the game to give the Knights their second win of the season.
The Rebels leave on Wednesday and fly to Alaska to play two games against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs and then Kenai River Brown Bears. The Rebels will return home on Friday, November 6 to play Johnstown.
