The North American Hockey League announced today its Stars of the Week for week ending January 8 and Rebels goalie Jack Leavy was named East Division player of the week while forward Evgeny Yakovlev was named second star.
Leavy was the winning netminder in both games during the Rebels weekend sweep over the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. He recorded his second shutout of the season on Friday night stopping all 26 shots he faced and only allowed two goals in Saturday night’s game. In all, he had a 1.50 goals against average and .961 save percentage. He improved his record on the season to 7-1-0. “Jack has been outstanding all year when called upon” stated Rebels head coach Joe Coombs. “And he was called upon this weekend and played very well. We now know that we have two goalies that can be counted upon” concluded Coombs. This is the second time Leavy has received league recognition. He was named the East Division’s second star of the week for week ending December 19.
Yakovlev had four points (1 goal and three assists) in the two wins. His goal 2:55 minutes into the third period during Saturday night’s game was the eventual game winner. On the season he has 24 points (8 goals and 16 assists). This is the second time Yakovlev has received league recognition. He was named East Division honorable mention for week ending November 5th.
