Panchisin and Fialkoff help lead Rebels to 2 – 1 SO win

Dec 9, 2023

Charles Panchisin scored the visiting Rebels lone goal in regulation and the only goal in the shootout while netminder Jack Fialkoff stopped 25 shots to help lead Philadelphia to a 2 – 1 win over the Maryland Black Bears in game one of this two-game series.

Despite being outshot in the first period, Fialkoff kept his teammates in the game having made several Grade A saves to keep Maryland off the scoreboard and send the contest into the middle stanza scoreless.

The Rebels thought that Brock Jones had opened the scoring with seven minutes remaining in the second after his shot went off the far side post. Upon review initiated by the officials, it was inconclusive, and the score remained at zero until Maryland’s Sebastian Brockman scored a powerplay goal with three minutes left in the second.

With 4:40 left in the second, Maryland’s Keaton Lipsett and Jones were assessed roughing penalty, but Jones was handed a double minor giving the Black Bears the man advantage. With time winding down on the powerplay Brockman scored a backdoor goal to give Maryland the 1 – 0 lead. It was Brockman’s second goal of the season.

Jones was called for another roughing penalty just eight seconds into the third period. Nineteen seconds later Panchisin scored his regulation goal.

Sonny DiNubile picked up the loose puck at his own near side blueline and made a cross-ice pass to Shawn Ramsey who sent a long stretch pass up to Max Marquette at the Maryland line. Marquette found a breaking Panchisin on his right and Panchisin walked in all alone and beat Black Bears goalie Colin Ronan glove side to make it a 1 – 1 game.

Fialkoff and Ronan made several keys saves in the third to keep the score tied at one and send it into overtime.

Both goalies replicated their play in the extra period enabling each team to earn a point and send it into a shootout.

Panchisin scored the shootout’s lone goal after taking a wrist shot that went off the crossbar and behind Ronan to give the Rebels the lead. Fialkoff stopped Maryland’s Jeremi Tremblay to preserve the win. Click HERE for the complete box score.
