SEWELL, N.J. — Cam Wilson scored in the opening round of the shootout and Jeremy Lowe turned aside all three New Jersey attempts as the Philadelphia Rebels defeated the Titans 3-2 Friday night at Hollydell Ice Arena to complete a home-and-home sweep.
Philadelphia and New Jersey played a scoreless opening period before all four regulation goals came during a back-and-forth second.
Oscar Djurberg opened the scoring less than a minute into the period on the power play, beating Titans goaltender Andrew Bely with a quick wrist shot for his first NAHL goal and a 1-0 Philadelphia lead.
Sullivan Stark doubled the advantage later in the period by crashing the net and tapping home a rebound for his first NAHL goal, putting the Rebels ahead 2-0.
New Jersey responded late in the period. Nikolas Doumas cut the deficit in half with a short-handed goal with 2:51 remaining, finishing a quick feed in front of Lowe.
Just 1:16 later, Hudson Slenker tied the game at 2 shortly after exiting the penalty box, sending the teams into the second intermission even.
Neither side broke through during the third period, but New Jersey nearly ended it in the closing seconds. A Rebels turnover with five seconds remaining sent Joshua Kitsis in alone on a breakaway, but Lowe made the stop to force overtime.
Philadelphia received another opportunity to win it during the extra period when Mikey Conlon was awarded a penalty shot. Bely denied Conlon to keep the game tied and eventually send it to a shootout.
Wilson put the Rebels in front by converting Philadelphia’s first attempt of the shootout. That proved to be all Lowe needed.
The Rebels goaltender denied Kaden Julik and Joe Pocrnic on New Jersey’s first two attempts before facing Kitsis with the game on the line. Lowe disrupted Kitsis’ attempt as the puck rolled away, securing the 3-2 victory and his first NAHL win.
Lowe finished with 36 saves on 38 shots, while Bely stopped 39 of Philadelphia’s 41 shots. The Rebels outshot the Titans 41-38 and went 1-for-4 on the power play while holding New Jersey scoreless on three opportunities.
The victory improved Philadelphia to 2-2-0-0 and gave the Rebels consecutive wins over New Jersey after Wednesday’s 5-1 victory in Middletown. The Rebels return to action Wednesday against the Ogden Mustangs in their opening game of the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
