Mar 7, 2026

The Philadelphia Rebels dropped a hard-fought 4–3 decision to the Maryland Black Bears on Friday evening.

Philadelphia struck first in the opening period when Abzal Alibek scored to give the Rebels a 1–0 advantage. The Rebels continued their strong start later in the period when defenseman Drew Belleson added a goal to extend the lead to 2–0. Maryland responded before the end of the period to cut the deficit in half, sending the teams into the first intermission with Philadelphia holding a 2–1 lead.

The second period proved to be the turning point. The Black Bears controlled the pace and generated consistent offensive pressure, outshooting the Rebels throughout the middle frame. Maryland tied the game early in the period before taking the lead shortly after. Forward Kristofers Krumins played a key role in the comeback, scoring twice in the game. The Black Bears also received goals from William Esterbrooks and Tanner Duncan, allowing Maryland to build a 4–2 advantage heading into the third period.

Philadelphia continued to battle in the final frame and managed to pull within one midway through the period. Jake Schultz scored the Rebels’ third goal of the night, finishing a play with assists from Jordan Brothers and Brayton Frick to make it a 4–3 game. The Rebels pushed for the equalizer during the closing minutes but were unable to solve Maryland goaltender Ryan Denes again.

Maryland held a significant edge in shots on goal, finishing the game with a 35–17 advantage. Rebels goaltender Ilja Nikitins turned in a strong performance despite the loss, stopping 31 of the 35 shots he faced to keep Philadelphia within striking distance throughout the game. Denes made 14 saves for Maryland to secure the win.

With the loss, the Rebels fall to 18-23-2-6 on the season. The victory improves Maryland’s record to 41-5-3-1, as the Black Bears continue to lead the East Division. The two teams complete the home-and-home set on Saturday at 7:30.
