The Rebels completed a weekend sweep last night by defeating the Kenai River Brown Bears 7-2, giving the Rebels 6 points out of 8 on a very successful Alaskan road trip.
Kenai opened the scoring in the first when Tanner Dufault took a pass from Sam Carlson and beat Rebels goalie Darion Hanson at the 11 minute mark of the opening period. The Rebels returned the favor when Andrew Bellant scored the team’s first of four power play goals at 14:14 by beating Brown Bears goalie Brian Baker. Bellant received assists from Michael Merulla and Andrew Zerban.
The Rebels blew open the game in the second period. Kristofers Bindulis scored on a power play goal 4:10 into the period with assists from Ryan Solomon and Bellant. Then Frank Spellman – the author of the “Blazing the Alaskan Trails” blogs you have been reading during the trip – scored three minutes later. He then scored :27 second left in the period by beating baker with assists from Bellant and defenseman Michael Underwood.
The third period started like the second with the boys scoring three goals. First, it was Kennett Square’s Michael Merulla at the 4:29 mark. Then it was Dean Balsamo scoring on a power play goal with assists from Merry Miettuten and Bindulis. Finally, David Chavis scored the team’s fourth power play goal with an assist from Solomon at the 12:40 mark. Kenai then finish the scoring when Jeffrey Fasegha beat Hanson on a power play goal at 15:49 with assists from Charles Spetz and Glassboro native and former Gloucester Catholic hockey star Dylan McArthur.
Hanson had 23 saves. Bellant had a four point night while Solomon had three points. Spellman had two goals.
The team will fly home and then play its next game on “Slapshot Night” when the Johnstown Tomahawks come to IceWorks on Friday, November 6. Click here for the box score.
